Volvo XC90: The Seven-Seat Luxury SUV That Ages Well

The XC90 is Volvo's flagship seven-seat SUV, imported into China since the second generation arrived in 2015. In China it was sold with T5 and T6 petrol engines, later replaced by B5 and B6 mild hybrids, and with a T8 plug-in hybrid at the top. This guide compares the two cars on this page — an early T5 and a later B6 — explains what changed over the years, what to inspect on a used example, and the export questions that matter: 95-octane fuel, air suspension, Volvo-specific diagnostics and parts.

Volvo XC90: The Seven-Seat Luxury SUV That Ages Well

What the XC90 Is

The XC90 is Volvo's largest SUV: seven seats across three rows, a transverse engine, and a body that is upright and calm rather than aggressive. The second generation arrived in 2015 and was imported into China throughout its life, so every car here is a European-built left-hand-drive vehicle.

It is not an off-roader in the Land Rover sense, despite the nameplate's history. It is a large family and executive SUV with all-wheel drive for grip, ground clearance for speed bumps and unpaved access roads, and a heavy emphasis on safety equipment.

China is a seven-seat market for this car: almost all XC90s sold there have the third row. That matters for export, because seven-seat premium SUVs are a small and specific segment.

How the Range Changed

The XC90 lived through several powertrain phases, and knowing which one you are looking at is more useful than knowing the model year.

T5 and T6, 2015 onwards. Both are 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines. The T5 is turbocharged; the T6 adds a supercharger as well, with noticeably more power. All-wheel drive came with the T6 and above; T5 cars were sold mainly as front-wheel drive in some markets, so check the individual car.

T8 plug-in hybrid. A 2.0-litre engine with an electric motor and a battery that can be charged from the mains. It was the most expensive and most complex version, and it is a different ownership proposition: charging infrastructure, battery condition and GB/T charging compatibility all matter.

B5 and B6, from around 2020. The same engines with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The B6 replaced the T6 as the mainstream all-wheel-drive petrol car. The 48-volt system smooths stop-start and supports the electrical load; it does not drive the car.

Trim names and equipment changed with each revision. The configuration sheet of the individual car is the only reliable description.

The Two Cars on This Page

The first is a 2016 XC90 T5 in 智逸版 trim with seven seats, finished in silver. The second is a 2023 XC90 B6 in 智雅豪华版 trim with seven seats, finished in black.

They represent the two ends of the range as most buyers will meet it: an early second-generation car with the simpler turbo-only engine, and a late car with the supercharged mild-hybrid drivetrain and much more equipment.

Both are left-hand drive, both are petrol, and both have the third row.

Cabin and Space

Volvo's interior is the reason many buyers choose the XC90 over German rivals. The design is quiet and horizontal, the seats are among the best in the class for long-distance comfort, and the materials have aged better than most.

The second row slides and folds, and the third row is usable for children and short adults rather than a token gesture. With all seven seats up, luggage space is limited; folded, the car becomes a van.

The 2016 car has an earlier version of the touchscreen system; the 2023 car has the later one. Both work, but check that the screen responds across its whole surface and that the maps and language can be changed for your market.

Driving It

The T5 is adequate rather than quick: a heavy seven-seat SUV with a turbocharged four-cylinder. The T6 and B6 add the supercharger and feel considerably stronger, especially loaded.

Ride quality depends on whether the car has air suspension. Steel-sprung cars are comfortable; air-sprung cars are more comfortable still and can be raised or lowered, at the cost of complexity. On a used car, the air suspension is the single biggest risk item.

Steering is light and the car is easy to place for its size. Refinement is good, and the cabin is quiet at motorway speed.

Buying Used: What to Check

Air suspension. Check all four corners raise and lower, listen for the compressor, and look for a car that sits level after a night. Ask for the history of any strut replacement.

48-volt system (B5 and B6). Confirm stop-start works and that no warning appears. The 48-volt battery and the belt-driven starter-generator are service items.

T8-specific checks. If you are looking at a plug-in, ask for a battery health report, test charging on a known-good charger, and confirm the charging port type matches your market.

Engine and gearbox. The four-cylinder engines are sensitive to oil quality. Look for regular servicing and listen for timing-chain noise on a cold start.

Electronics. Test the touchscreen, the digital instrument cluster, every seat adjustment, the powered tailgate and the sunroof. Volvo modules need Volvo software to diagnose.

Body and glass. Panoramic roofs can leak if drains block. Check for water stains in the headlining and around the third row.

Tyres. A seven-seat SUV eats tyres. Matching premium rubber matters for ride and for the all-wheel-drive system.

Export Notes

Left-hand drive only. Imported cars are LHD, which suits the CIS, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Fuel. The 2.0-litre engines want high-octane petrol. Where 95 is unavailable, plan for additives and be honest about the performance loss.

Diagnostics. Volvo uses its own diagnostic platform. A generic scanner will read engine codes but not everything; confirm your workshop has Volvo tools before promising service.

Parts. Volvo's global parts network is reasonable, and the XC90 shares much with the S90 and V90. Body panels and interior trim specific to the imported car should be ordered before shipping.

Air suspension in hot, dusty markets. Heat and dust shorten the life of air springs. Budget for it and tell the customer.

Plug-in hybrids. For T8 cars, confirm the destination market accepts the GB/T charging standard, or plan a conversion. A plug-in without a charging option is just a heavy petrol car.

Emissions. Each car's emission standard is whatever its accompanying certificate states — 逐车以随车证书为准 — and the destination country applies its own rules to that document.

Paperwork. Export licence, invoice, registration certificate and VIN must agree with each other and with the car.

Who It Suits

The XC90 suits a buyer who needs seven usable seats, wants a quiet and safe premium SUV, and values a car that still looks modern a decade after launch. It does not suit someone who wants a tow car for heavy trailers, a genuine off-roader, or the cheapest possible running costs.

FAQ

Is the XC90 all-wheel drive? T6, B6 and T8 cars are. Some T5 cars were front-wheel drive; check the individual car.

Is it really seven seats? In China, almost all cars have three rows. Confirm on the specific car.

Which is better, T6 or B6? The B6 is the later mild-hybrid version of the same idea. It is smoother and newer; the T6 is simpler.

Does it have air suspension? Not all cars do. Check the configuration and look under the car.

Can it be serviced outside China? Yes, with Volvo diagnostic tools. Confirm your local workshop before buying.

Is the T8 a good export choice? Only where charging is available and the GB/T standard is accepted.
