Volvo S90 Buying Guide for Export Buyers: The Premium Sedan China Already Exports

The S90 has an unusual distinction: the long-wheelbase version is built in Daqing, China, and Volvo has shipped China-built S90s to overseas markets for years — so "China-spec" carries no compromise here. This guide maps the single generation and its 2021 facelift, decodes the T4/T5 to B4/B5 badge change and the trim ladder, and lists the checks that matter, from the 48V mild-hybrid system to the per-car emissions certificate.

Volvo S90 Buying Guide for Export Buyers: The Premium Sedan China Already Exports

The Flagship China Builds for the World

Most premium sedans in China are built locally for the local market. The Volvo S90 goes further: the long-wheelbase S90L is built at Volvo's plant in Daqing, Heilongjiang, and that plant has supplied S90s to overseas markets as well — the car in a Stockholm or Dubai showroom may well have rolled off the same line as the ones on Chinese plates. For the export buyer that matters twice over: the build origin carries no stigma, and the factory's export history means parts and documentation follow international practice.

The current S90 is a single generation, launched in 2016 on the SPA platform shared with the XC90. China got the long-wheelbase version from late 2016, and the model settled into a steady niche: the understated alternative to the German trio, bought by owners who prize safety and restraint over badge theatre. That owner profile — often corporate, usually dealer-serviced — makes for a clean used supply.

Generation Map and the 2021 Facelift

2017–2020 model years. The pre-facelift cars. Clean Scandinavian interior with the portrait Sensus touchscreen, Thor's Hammer daytime running lights, and badges reading T4, T5 or T8.

2021 model year onward. The facelift brought revised bumpers and grille, full-LED taillights with sequential indicators, and the important mechanical change: the petrol engines gained a 48V mild-hybrid system and the badges changed from T4/T5 to B4/B5. From 2022 the infotainment moved to an Android-based system. When a listing says 2021 or later, assume the facelift; when in doubt, the taillight signature settles it.

One structural note: all S90 sedans you will meet in China are the long-wheelbase S90L, roughly 12 cm longer between the axles than the European standard car — all of it gifted to the rear seat. For markets where the owner rides in the back, that is a selling point, not a footnote.

Decoding the Badges and Trims

  • T5 / B5 — the volume drivetrain: a 2.0-litre turbo four with an eight-speed automatic, front-wheel drive. T5 is the pre-facelift badge, B5 the 48V mild-hybrid successor. Performance is effortless rather than exciting; the drivetrain suits long highway legs.
  • T4 / B4 — the lower-tune version of the same engine. Cheaper to buy, adequate in town, working harder at highway speed.
  • T8 Twin Engine — the plug-in hybrid flagship, with all-wheel drive. Quick on paper, but rare in the used market and a different inspection conversation.

The trim ladder in China reads 智逸 (base) → 智远 (mid) → 智雅 (flagship), mostly in 豪华版 (luxury) form with some 运动版 (sport-styled) variants. City Safety autonomous braking is standard across the range, and Pilot Assist lane-keeping cruise is widely fitted from mid trims up — verify per car rather than assuming.

What to Inspect Before Export

  1. The 48V mild-hybrid system on B4/B5 cars. The belt-driven starter-generator should restart the engine inaudibly at every stop; hesitation, warning lights or a shudder mean the 48V battery or motor needs a diagnostic read before you negotiate.
  2. The eight-speed automatic. The Aisin unit is durable, but ask for fluid-change history and test cold-shift quality. A gearbox that thumps on a cold morning is common enough to check for, cheap enough to walk away from.
  3. The 2.0-litre turbo's seals and cooling. Look for oil weeping at the timing cover and coolant traces around the pump; both are known age-related items on these engines, visible on a lift in minutes.
  4. Electronics, systematically. The portrait screen, cameras, seat ventilation and Pilot Assist — test everything on a live drive, not just at idle. Later Android-based cars should be checked for account sign-out and a factory reset before shipping.
  5. If it is a T8: the hybrid side. Verify AC charging works at full rate and ask for a battery health read. A T8 with a tired hybrid battery is an expensive petrol car carrying dead weight.
  6. Emissions certificate, car by car. China V and China VI cars both circulate in this range; what your destination accepts is the certificate of the individual vehicle. Verify it before purchase.

The Export Verdict

The S90 is the quiet rational choice of the premium-sedan shelf: German-rivalling space and safety, a powertrain with no exotic failure modes, and a badge that reads as taste rather than status. The China-built origin is not a caveat here but part of the provenance — this is the premium sedan China already sends abroad. Prioritise facelift B5 cars with dealer history, verify the 48V system and the gearbox on a cold start, and confirm each car's emissions certificate against your destination's rules. Done that way, the S90 is one of the lowest-drama purchases in this segment.
