Mercedes-Benz GLB Buying Guide for Export Buyers: Compact SUV, Optional Third Row

The Beijing-built Mercedes-Benz GLB packages an upright body, a flexible cabin and an available third row into the compact premium-SUV class. This guide explains the X247 generation and its facelift, separates the GLB 200 1.3T from the GLB 220 2.0T, sets realistic expectations for seven-seat use, and lists the dual-clutch, seating, electronics and per-car document checks that matter before export.

The GLB's Real Difference Is Packaging

The Mercedes-Benz GLB occupies a specific gap in the brand's SUV range. It is more upright and family-oriented than the GLA, yet it does not try to mimic a body-on-frame off-roader. Built in China by Beijing Benz and launched locally in 2019, the X247 uses the same front-wheel-drive-based MFA2 architecture found across Mercedes' compact family. Its square windows, near-vertical tail and long roof are not just styling decisions: they make the cabin easier to package and easier to use.

For an export buyer, the GLB's strongest story is flexibility. It can be presented as a premium compact SUV for daily driving, a five-seat family car with useful luggage room or, where the individual vehicle has the third row, an occasional seven-seater. That last phrase matters. The third row is best treated as accommodation for children or shorter trips, not as a promise of full-size adult seating.

One Generation, Two Visual Eras

Early X247 cars, including 2020–2023 model years. These establish the formula: upright body, rectangular wheel-arch trim, a wide dashboard with twin displays and either five seats or a third-row installation depending on specification. Interior equipment and driver assistance vary, so verify the actual vehicle rather than relying on the model badge.

Facelifted cars, commonly seen as 2024 model year onward in China. The lighting signatures, grille and bumper details were revised, and the MBUX cabin interface was updated. Earlier GLBs also have visually impressive dual-screen dashboards, so a large display alone does not prove that a car is the facelift. Use the lighting, front-end details and vehicle record together.

The GLB 35 is a different performance conversation, with AMG-specific hardware. Do not describe a GLB 200 or GLB 220 with an AMG-style grille as a GLB 35; exterior parts can be changed, while the vehicle record and drivetrain tell the real story.

GLB 200 Versus GLB 220

  • GLB 200 — the volume drivetrain in early Chinese cars: a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, front-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Despite the small displacement, it is a four-cylinder engine, not a three-cylinder. Its character is suited to urban driving and steady highway use; the inspection priority is smooth low-speed clutch behaviour rather than expecting performance-car acceleration.
  • GLB 220 — the later 2.0-litre turbocharged alternative with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. It offers stronger reserves for overtaking, hills and a loaded cabin. Some markets and specifications may pair the 2.0T with 4MATIC; never infer the driven axles from the engine size alone.
  • Five seats versus seven — a separate specification question from the engine. A GLB 200 can have a third row, and the presence of a 220 badge does not automatically prove one is fitted. Open the tailgate, inspect the seatbacks and count the seatbelt positions on the actual car.

Trim names such as 动感型 (Dynamic) and 时尚型 (Fashion) describe equipment packages, not different mechanical generations. Confirm convenience features individually: tailgate operation, seat adjustment, cameras, panoramic roof, driver aids and audio can all differ.

They provide a direct comparison of the two principal engines without treating trim appearance as proof of mechanical specification.

What to Inspect Before Export

  1. Dual-clutch behaviour at manoeuvring speed. On the GLB 200's seven-speed and the GLB 220's eight-speed, test gentle take-off, reverse, hill holding and stop-start traffic. Brief clutch engagement is normal; repeated shudder, hesitation, banging or warning messages require diagnosis.
  2. Engine condition from a cold start. Listen for unstable idle and scan every control unit. On the 1.3T, check oil and coolant condition, mounts and service evidence. On the 2.0T, inspect for leaks and confirm that maintenance matches the vehicle's age and use.
  3. Every seating position and folding mechanism. Raise and fold the third row where fitted, test its belts and buckles, and check that the second row slides and locks correctly. Inspect the load floor and side trim for water or damage hidden beneath folded seats.
  4. Tyres and 4MATIC where equipped. Compare all four tyre specifications and wear patterns. On an all-wheel-drive car, inspect the rear drivetrain for leaks and listen during tight low-speed turns and straight acceleration.
  5. MBUX and cabin electronics. Pair a phone, test voice and steering-wheel controls, cameras, parking sensors, climate control, powered seats and the tailgate. Check for warning messages after a full drive, not only immediately after startup.
  6. Emissions certificate, car by car. Do not infer compliance from the year, engine or trim. Verify the individual vehicle's accompanying certificate against the destination's import requirements before purchase.

The Export Verdict

The GLB should be sold on honest versatility, not exaggerated off-road imagery or third-row promises. Its compact footprint, upright cabin and Mercedes-Benz identity make it easy to understand; the available folding third row adds usefulness when its limits are explained. Choose the GLB 200 for its straightforward everyday character or the GLB 220 for stronger 2.0T performance, then verify the gearbox, actual seating layout and equipment on the individual car. A careful inspection and correct documents matter more than any badge on the tailgate.
