Lynk & Co 03: The Sporty Compact Sedan Built on Volvo Know-How
Lynk & Co is the brand Geely and Volvo Cars created together in 2016, and the 03 is its first sedan: a compact four-door built on the CMA platform shared with the Volvo XC40, with a split-headlight front end and two turbocharged engine families. This guide covers the 1.5T three-cylinder and the 2.0T, including the 03+ performance version, what the cabins are like, what to check on a used car, and what an export buyer should confirm before shipping.

What the 03 Is
Lynk & Co was set up in 2016 as a joint brand between Geely and Volvo Cars. Its first cars were SUVs; the 03, launched in 2018, was the brand's first sedan.
The car is a compact four-door built on the CMA platform, the architecture developed with Volvo and used under the XC40 among others. That origin explains two things buyers notice immediately: the car is set up more firmly than most Chinese sedans of its price, and the safety and electrical architecture come from a European development programme rather than being designed from scratch.
Lynk & Co's identity is aimed at younger buyers: bold styling, bright colour options, a strong online and app-based sales model, and a long warranty in its home market. Some of that infrastructure does not travel abroad, which matters for an export purchase.

Design Cues
The most recognisable feature is the split lighting. The daytime running lights sit high on the shoulders of the bonnet, above the main headlamp units that are set into the grille band. From the front, the car looks wider and lower than most compact sedans.
The body is a three-box saloon with a short rear deck and a roofline that drops toward the boot. The 2022 facelift widened the front end and revised the bumper and rear, so later cars look broader across the nose than earlier ones.
Wheels are large for the class, and most versions sit on dark or two-tone alloys. Check the wheels carefully on a used car: they are easy to kerb and expensive to replace.

Engines
The 03 has been sold with two main engine families:
- 1.5T three-cylinder. The volume engine, usually paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive. It is smooth for a three-cylinder at speed, but it is still a three-cylinder, and buyers should be honest about whether that matters to them.
- 2.0T four-cylinder. More power, offered with a conventional automatic in most versions. Smoother and less stressed, and the better choice if the car will be loaded or driven at altitude.
- 03+. The performance version: 2.0T, all-wheel drive, four-wheel drive chassis tuning, flared bodywork and a bright yellow paint option. It is a different car in character from the standard 03, and a rarer one.
The two cars described here are both 1.5T dual-clutch cars. The trim names, 劲 冠军版 and 劲Pro, refer to equipment levels: sport seats, larger wheels, driver assistance and audio differ between them.

Inside
The cabin is driver-focused. The centre console is angled toward the driver, the seats have prominent side bolsters, and the material mix includes soft-touch panels with bright accents.
Space is adequate rather than generous. Front occupants have room; rear passengers get compact-car legroom, and the sloping roofline cuts headroom at the back. The boot is a normal saloon shape and size.
The infotainment is a large central touchscreen with a digital instrument cluster. Lynk & Co built its cars around connected services and a phone app, including remote functions. Outside China, expect parts of that ecosystem, especially voice control and some online services, to be unavailable or limited. Confirm what works before purchase, not after.

How It Drives
This is where the 03 differs from the average Chinese compact sedan. The steering is heavier and more direct, the suspension is firmer, and the body is controlled over crests and dips. It is set up to feel agile rather than plush.
The 1.5T dual-clutch combination is at its best in flowing driving. In stop-start traffic a dual-clutch can be hesitant from rest; that is normal behaviour, not automatically a fault. Shuddering, clunks and a delay of more than a moment when engaging a gear are not.
The 2.0T gives the car the performance the chassis deserves, and the 03+ goes further with all-wheel drive and a much more aggressive setup. On rough roads the firmer suspension and low-profile tyres transmit more surface detail into the cabin than a comfort-oriented sedan would.
What to Check on a Used Car
- Three-cylinder refinement. Check engine mounts and listen at idle with the bonnet open and from inside the cabin. A worn mount turns a mild vibration into a noticeable shake.
- Dual-clutch behaviour. Drive slowly in traffic, reverse up a slope and listen for noises on engagement.
- Cooling and oil. Look for coolant residue around the engine bay and check the oil level and colour. Turbocharged small engines reward disciplined servicing.
- Infotainment and app. Test the screen, the cameras and any connected function, and confirm which services need a Chinese account.
- Body and trim. Check the wheel arches, front bumper lip and side skirts for scrapes, and confirm that all trim clips and badges are present.
- Wheels and tyres. Large wheels with low-profile tyres are easily damaged; check for kerb marks, buckles and uneven wear.
- Suspension and brakes. Look for leaking dampers and worn bushes, and check brake discs for lipping.
- Documents. Confirm the version from the registration document rather than the listing title. Emission compliance is confirmed per vehicle against the certificate travelling with that car, not by model.
Export Notes
- Left-hand drive. The 03 is built for left-hand-drive markets. Confirm the import rules of the destination country.
- Brand presence. Lynk & Co has been sold in Europe as well as China, but not in every market, and the dealer network is uneven. Before buying, confirm that a workshop can service the car and read its diagnostics.
- Parts. The car shares the CMA architecture with Volvo models, which helps familiarity, but architecture sharing does not mean parts are interchangeable. Ask for part numbers and check availability locally before shipping.
- Software and connectivity. The connected features were designed around Chinese services. Confirm what works abroad and what can be replaced or disabled.
- Documents. Invoice, certificate of conformity, export licence and vehicle identification number must agree.

Which One to Choose
The black 2021 劲 冠军版 and the grey 2022 劲Pro are close in mechanical specification. The later car has the revised front end and, depending on equipment, a slightly more modern cabin. The earlier car may be cheaper for the same condition.
If you want the character the 03 is known for, look at a 2.0T or, if the budget and local support allow, an 03+. If the car is mainly a city commuter, the 1.5T is the pragmatic choice, provided you are comfortable with a three-cylinder engine and a dual-clutch gearbox.
For an export buyer, the deciding factor is support: a workshop that knows the platform and can source parts outweighs a year or two of model age.
