BMW X3: The China-Built SUV That Still Uses the Global Body

Twelve X3s in stock, ¥90,000 to ¥269,000. Why the Chinese-built X3 is the global body (unlike the 5 Li), which cars are China 5, what the xDrive and B48 weak points are, and which trim you should actually quote.

BMW X3: The China-Built SUV That Still Uses the Global Body

Why the X3 Is the Easier Chinese BMW to Sell

The 5 Series in China is a long-wheelbase car built for the domestic market. The X3 is not. BMW Brilliance has built the X3 in Shenyang since 2018, but it is the global body — the same one sold in Europe and North America, standard wheelbase, same panels. For an exporter that is a meaningful difference: your buyer's local dealer can look up parts from the same catalogue as any other X3 in the world.

What you are really choosing between is not body styles but engines, emissions standards and condition. Twelve cars in stock, from ¥90,000 to ¥269,000, spread across two distinct points in the model's life.

📊

Key stat: 12 X3s in stock — seven pre-facelift cars (2018–2020) at ¥90,000–159,800 and five facelift cars (2023) at ¥228,000–269,000.

Two Points in the Model's Life

G01 pre-facelift (2018–2020) — 7 units

The cars that make the X3 accessible. Cheap entry, but read the mileage column carefully: two units are around 155,000 km, and one of those is the cheapest car in the list at ¥90,000. There is also a China 5 example in this group — see the emissions note below.

G01 facelift (2023) — 5 units

Newer nose, updated iDrive hardware, and the only cars here that look current. Four are xDrive30i in the M Sport Night package at ¥228,000–269,000; one xDrive25i is priced on application.

xDrive30i2.0T B48185 kW / 350 N·mAWD, 8-speed automatic

All-wheel drive is standard across the range in China — there is no rear-drive sDrive X3 in this stock. The eight-speed automatic is the ZF unit used across the BMW range, and it is the least of your worries on this car.

⚠️

⚠️ Caution: the trim badge tells you the power output, not the engine size. All three are 2.0T. If your market taxes by displacement, the 25i, 28i and 30i cost the same to import and different to sell.

Width1,891 mm

These are the global numbers, not a Chinese variant. That is the point: no special rear doors, no China-only glass, no parts dead end.

What Export Buyers Should Check

  1. Emission standard. One 2018 unit in stock is China 5; the rest are China 6. A China 5 car is cheaper here and easier to place in markets with looser rules, but check what your importer allows before you buy a 2018 car specifically because it is cheap.
  2. Mileage versus price. Two cars at roughly 155,000 km sit next to 2018 cars at 85,000 km for not much more money. On an X3 the difference shows up in suspension bushes, dampers and the transfer case, not just the engine.
  3. xDrive transfer case. Listen for whine under load and feel for shudder at low speed on full lock. It is a known wear item on this platform and an expensive one to replace.
  4. B48 service items. Coolant loss from the plastic flange, valve-cover breathers and the oil-filter housing gasket are the common jobs on this engine. Ask for the service history and check for dried coolant residue around the thermostat housing.
  5. Run-flat tyres. Most Chinese-market X3s left the factory on run-flats. If the buyer's market prefers conventional tyres, price a set into the quote — and check the wheels are not damaged from run-flat use on flat tyres.
  6. iDrive and maps. Chinese-market cars carry China maps and region-locked connected services. Navigation will not work abroad, and interface languages vary by unit. Confirm on the actual car.
  7. Facelift or not. A 2023 car and a 2020 car are different products at different prices; do not let a buyer compare them on the badge alone.

Who Should Import It

A good fit when the buyer wants:

  • A premium compact SUV whose parts catalogue is the same worldwide
  • All-wheel drive as standard, with no China-only bodywork
  • The 2018–2020 cars as affordable volume
  • The 2023 xDrive30i as a near-new retail unit in a market that pays for the badge

Think twice when:

  • The buyer wants a long rear seat — that is the 5 Li, not the X3
  • The unit is the ¥90,000 car with 155,000 km and no service history — this is the one that can eat the margin
  • The market is strict on emissions — check the China 5 car against your importer's rules first
  • The buyer expects working navigation — same limitation as every China-market car
