Audi Q5L Buying Guide for Export Buyers: The Long-Wheelbase SUV China Kept for Itself
The Q5L is the long-wheelbase Audi SUV that exists only in China — and it is one of the deepest pools of premium used SUVs in the country. This guide separates the first-generation Q5 from the 2018-on Q5L and the Sportback, decodes the 40/45 TFSI badges and the trim ladder, explains what changed with quattro ultra, and lists the checks that matter before export.

The SUV China Would Not Give Back
When Audi launched the second-generation Q5 globally, China got something the rest of the world did not: the Q5L, a long-wheelbase version built by FAW-VW Audi in Changchun and sold only in China. The stretch — roughly 9 cm, all of it in the rear doors — turned a compact premium SUV into a legitimate rear-seat car, which is exactly what the Chinese market rewards. Since 2018 the Q5L has been one of the country's best-selling premium SUVs, and that sales depth is now the export buyer's supply depth.

The Three Body Stories
First-generation Q5 (imported and China-built, roughly 2009–2018). The original car, sold in China both as an import and as a locally built model. These use the older EA888 engine generations and a conventional automatic with a mechanical all-wheel-drive system. Early EA888 Gen2 cars have a well-documented oil-consumption history — on a first-generation car, service records matter more than the odometer.
Q5L (2018–present). The long-wheelbase second generation, China-only. All mainstream versions use the EA888 Gen3 2.0-litre turbo in two tunes, with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. A facelift for the 2021 model year brought the honeycomb grille and sharper lights — the black 2024 car below is a facelift car, the white 2018 car is launch-era.
Q5L Sportback (2020–present). The coupe-roofed derivative for buyers who want the look over the cargo space. Same mechanicals, smaller rear headroom and boot.

Decoding the Badges and the Trim Ladder
The TFSI number is a power grade, not a displacement — every mainstream Q5L is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder:
- 40 TFSI — the lower tune, front-biased in feel, the volume seller.
- 45 TFSI — the higher tune, and the one most export buyers should target: stronger resale recognition abroad and the full quattro experience.
- Older first-generation cars may carry plain 2.0 TFSI badging.
One drivetrain change matters for your buyers: the Q5L generation switched from a permanent mechanical four-wheel drive to quattro ultra, an on-demand system that decouples the rear axle to save fuel. It is more efficient and perfectly capable on road, but marketing it as the old Torsen system is a mistake — spec it honestly.
The Chinese trim ladder reads bottom to top roughly as 进取 (Progressive) → 时尚 (Fashion) → 风尚/豪华 (Style/Luxury) → 尊享 (Premium Plus), with two appearance lines: 致雅 (elegance) with chrome, and 动感 (sport) with darker, sportier trim. Special editions — like the RS套件燃速型 with RS-look packages — appear regularly. Equipment jumps that matter abroad: virtual cockpit, panoramic roof, matrix-style headlights and the driver-assistance pack live at the top of the ladder.
Our Inspection Cars
The black car is a 2024-model 45 TFSI Luxury Sport (豪华动感型) — the high-tune facelift car in its sportiest regular trim. The white car is a 2018-model 40 TFSI Fashion (荣享时尚型) — a launch-year Q5L, useful to show what the first cars of this generation look like today.

What to Inspect Before Export
- Water pump and thermostat housing. The EA888 Gen3's plastic cooling components are the engine's known weak point — look for coolant traces around the pump and housing on a cold engine.
- Dual-clutch gearbox behaviour. The seven-speed S tronic should engage smoothly from standstill and shift without shudder at parking speeds. Hesitation or judder on a test drive is a negotiation point or a walk-away, depending on records.
- Oil consumption history. Gen3 engines are far better than the Gen2 they replaced, but on any higher-mileage car check for top-up habits in the service file and inspect tailpipes for soot.
- Sunroof drains and cabin water. Clogged panoramic-roof drains let water into the footwells and the electronics beneath — check under the carpets, not just the headline systems.
- Electronics sweep. Virtual cockpit, cameras, seat motors, tailgate, matrix lights: China-spec cars carry a lot of it, and it is all expensive abroad.
- Emissions certificate, car by car. China V and China VI cars both circulate in this model range; what counts at your destination is the certificate of the individual vehicle. Verify it before purchase.

The Export Verdict
The Q5L combines global badge recognition with a body style — the long wheelbase — that reads as an upgrade in most export markets, not a curiosity. Target the facelift 45 TFSI cars where budgets allow, the launch-year 40 TFSI where value rules, and let the cooling system, the gearbox test drive and the service file decide between individual cars.
