Audi A3 Buying Guide for Export Buyers: Two Body Styles, One Engine, Zero Mystery
The China-built A3 is the entry ticket to the German premium badges, and it is mercifully simple to source: a 1.4-litre turbo, a seven-speed dual-clutch box, front-wheel drive, in either a hatchback or a China-only long-wheelbase sedan. This guide maps the two generations you will meet, explains the 35 TFSI badge and the trim ladder, and lists the checks that matter — above all the dry dual-clutch gearbox and the 1.4T service items.

The Gateway Premium Car
Every export market has buyers who want the German premium badge at the smallest sensible budget, and in China that car is the Audi A3. Built by FAW-Audi since 2014, it is the volume entry point to the four rings — which means deep used supply, dealer service histories and parts availability everywhere the VAG family is understood.
The sourcing equation is unusually clean. Across both generations you will meet in the used market, the mainstream China-spec car is the same recipe: a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive. There is no quattro to chase and no engine lottery; the variables are body style, generation, trim and condition. That makes the A3 one of the easiest premium cars to buy remotely and describe honestly in a listing.

Two Generations You Will Actually See
Third generation (2014–2020 model years). The original China-built car, sold as the Sportback five-door hatch and the Limousine sedan. Conventional dials or early virtual cockpit, a retractable infotainment screen, and mature mechanicals. These are the budget cars of the range, and there are plenty of them.
Fourth generation (2021 model year onward). A full redesign with a sharper hexagonal grille, a screen-centred dashboard and the important Chinese twist: alongside the standard-wheelbase Sportback, the sedan became the A3L Limousine, with a stretched wheelbase given over to rear legroom. For markets where a small premium sedan must carry adults in the back, the A3L is the version that makes sense.
Quick visual check: the fourth-generation car has a wide, frameless-look grille and a cabin dominated by a driver-facing touchscreen; the third-generation car has a slimmer grille with horizontal bars and a screen that rises from the dash.

The 35 TFSI Badge and the Trim Ladder
- 35 TFSI — the badge on virtually every A3 you will inspect: the 1.4-litre turbo with the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. The unit to understand is the dry-clutch version of that box: brilliant on an open road, sensitive to a life of stop-start traffic. More on that in the inspection list.
- Rare exceptions — earlier cars occasionally carry a 40 TFSI badge (2.0-litre turbo) and imported examples exist. Treat them as separate cars with separate research; they are the minority.
- Trims — the ladder generally reads 进取 (entry) → 时尚 (mid) → 运动 (sport-styled), with the fashion-sport combinations such as 时尚运动型 bundling the popular kit: upgraded wheels, sport seats and the S line look. On fourth-generation cars the mid trims already include the digital cockpit most buyers want.
The export read: a mid-trim fourth-generation A3L is the most balanced listing; a clean third-generation car is the budget play. In both cases, service history matters more than the trim badge.

What to Inspect Before Export
- The dry dual-clutch gearbox, in traffic. Do not judge it on an open-road test alone. In slow stop-start driving, feel for judder on pull-away, hesitation when creeping and clunks on low-speed shifts; ask for any clutch or mechatronic work in the history. A gearbox that behaves in traffic is half the car's value confirmed.
- The 1.4T's service items. The EA211-family engine uses a timing belt — ask when it was last replaced and budget for it if undocumented. Check the water pump and thermostat housing for coolant traces, a known age item on these engines.
- Fourth-generation electronics. Cycle the touchscreen, virtual cockpit, parking cameras and driver aids on a live drive; verify the car's accounts are signed out and a factory reset is possible before shipping. On third-generation cars, check the pop-up screen mechanism and the older MMI controller.
- Suspension and tyres on sport trims. Bigger wheels and sport suspension mean more impact damage and costlier tyres. Inspect wheel rims for cracks and bends, and measure all four tyres rather than kicking them.
- Service history, always. These cars are cheap to maintain at the dealer while young, so most have records. A gap-free history is worth more to your buyer than any single option.
- Emissions certificate, car by car. China V and China VI cars both circulate across these generations; what your destination accepts is the certificate of the individual vehicle. Verify it before purchase.

The Export Verdict
The A3 is the low-risk way to put a German premium badge into an export programme: one drivetrain to learn, two body styles to choose between, and a used market deep enough to be picky. Buy the fourth-generation A3L when the buyer wants rear space and the current cabin; buy a well-documented third-generation car when the brief is purely price. Whichever you choose, judge the dry dual-clutch in traffic, not on the highway, and verify each car's emissions certificate against destination rules. Simple cars reward disciplined inspection — and punish shortcuts just as reliably.
